Description

Original Item: Only One Available. World War One “Back Our Girls Over There”, 28″ x 21″ Artist: Clarence Underwood. Printed for the Y.W.C.A., this poster promoted women’s work in the war effort overseas. The United War Work Campaign represented several prominent organizations that were active in providing services to those in the military. Represented were the Y.M.C.A., Y.W.C.A., National Catholic War Council, Knights of Columbus, Jewish Welfare Board, War Camp Community Service, American Library Association, and Salvation Army. The goal for the group was to raise over 170 million dollars. This poster is one of many which promoted the women’s work overseas. The army hired women to serve as telephone operators overseas, as this poster shows. The United War Work Campaign was a combined effort of several organizations, including the Y.W.C.A., to raise money for the war. World War I was the first time in American history that women were officially part of the military and government agencies. But, while women were being encouraged to serve in the war, women were also protesting for their right to vote.
