Original Item: Only one available. Here is an octagonal barreled “Kentucky” rifle, which is in the style typical for the Ohio area in the mid 19th century. It looks to be in .36″ caliber, a very common size for these rifles, and has a heavy octagonal barrel with seven groove rifling. The rifle was built in the United States, most likely using a percussion trade lock. The lock plate is quite pitted from powder burn, so we cannot make out any markings on it.
We estimate that this octagonal barrel rifle was made about 1845, and it features mostly brass mounts, including a nose cap. The barrel escutcheons look to be Nickel Silver, and there are ornamentations added on the butt stock that are also Nickel silver.
The full length stock is made of very attractive “flamed” or “tiger” maple, where the wood grain undulates, giving it a lovely iridescent quality. This was a very popular material for high end rifles of the time. The buttstock, has a very nice cheek piece as well. The left side of the butt stock has a very nice brass patch box, opened by a button on the bottom of the stock. There are some repairs to the stock, including metal reinforcement of the wrist, and a grafted on section near the nose cap. Also there is some splintering on the woodline along the barrel, where the wood is very thin.
