Original Item: Only One Available. The Remington Rolling block design was truly a great one, in service for 50 years in various forms. The action was strong, and it could be adapted to take many cartridges, both in black powder and smokeless powder. Sadly, it did not gain any major military contracts in the United States, but it Remington did produce rifles and bayonets for many foreign contracts, and also licensed the design to countries such as Denmark.

However, by the turn of the century, single shot rifles were definitely a thing of the past. However, with the outbreak of WWI, in November 1914, production of the Rolling Block was resumed, in the form of a French contract for rifles in 8×50mmR Lebel. These were designated by France as Fusil Remington modèle 1914. 100,291 such rifles were delivered by 1916, and used to equip rear-line troops.

Along with this, the French requested a long 16 inch blade version of the Remington No.5 Export Bayonet, and that is what we have here. The design is typical of the late 19th / early 20th century, with a hooked quillon, wooden grips, and a single edged fullered blade. The blade fuller is clearly marked REMINGTON ARMS Co. ILION. N.Y., with no other markings, as is correct.

This bayonet came to us from a very large collection in Europe, and is in very good condition….
