Springfield Armory M1D Garand sniper rifle. Late WWII receiver, serial number dates to June 1944. Springfield barrel with a beautiful bore. All parts are described below and shown in photos. Cal. 30-06. Standard M1D configuration with 24 bbl, standard battle sights, has the original M1D scope mounting bracket over the chamber area with scope mount containing an M84 scope with rubber eye cup. Mounted in walnut stock & handguards with a laced on, orig equipment MRT/2 52 burgundy leather cheekpiece. It has stamped sheet metal butt-plate with trap. These sniper rifles were designed by the U.S. Government in the late stages of WWII so that the telescope and mounting system could be retrofitted to any rifle by simply changing the bbl. These rifles saw very limited use toward the end of WWII with the majority of them being assembled in Japan after the war in the arsenals that we controlled under martial law. The Dept. of the Army Ordnance decided that it was a less costly and an easier procedure to send the parts over to Japan rather than sending the rifles back to the U.S. for rebuild. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl & receiver assembly retain 97-98% of the orig arsenal parkerizing from time of build. Scope & mount retain about all of their original finish with the eye cup soft & pliable. Handguards are extremely fine with just a couple of light scuff marks on the rear one with the buttstock also showing extremely fine with only a couple of light blemishes. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore.
