The U.S. Airborne Command Shoulder Patch was created in 1943, and used during WWII to designate smaller Airborne units before they were assigned to a formal division. Units such as the 501st and 506th Parachute Infantry regiments wore this patch before being assigned to the 101st Airborne Division.
